About uPVC Casement Windows

The hinged, outward-opening window, made to measure.

A casement window features outward opening sections that swing open on hinges rather than sliding, tilting or pivoting. Side hung windows open like a door for a full change of air, while top hung windows can be left ajar in light rain. Either can be paired with fixed panes within a single window unit using our standard window configurations.

Our casement windows are built on a rebated profile, where the sash sits slightly proud of the outer frame to give a defined, stepped edge. This window profile suits most types of modern architecture but can be styled with aesthetic glazing bars to mimic a more traditional appearance.  If you would rather the opening portion of the window sat level with the frame, so appeared flat from the outside, the same opening styles are offered as our flush casement windows.

Modern Casement Windows

Clean lines for contemporary homes.

The stepped sash of a rebated frame suits new builds, extensions and updated façades, where sharper detailing helps windows sit confidently within the building.

Slim sightlines, larger panes and architectural dark colours give a modern casement window a considered look, particularly when specified with a chamfered profile. Opening sashes can sit alongside picture windows to keep the glazing as uninterrupted as possible.

Traditional Casement Windows

Period character, modern performance.

For cottages, Victorian terraces and character properties, a casement window can be styled to respect the original architecture.

A sculptured profile softens the frame edge, while glazing bars, handles and stays, and finishes in heritage tones or realistic woodgrains recreate the look of traditional timber. Behind the styling sits current uPVC engineering, so heritage styled casement windows built this way keep the thermal and security performance of the rest of the range.

Choosing The Right Opening

Casement is the starting point, not the only option.

Living rooms and bedrooms usually benefit from a side hung opening section that opens wide to allow rapid ventilation or cooling. Kitchens and bathrooms often suit a smaller top hung opening section, which can stay open while cooking or during a shower.

Where an outward swing is impractical, inward opening windows turn the same hinged action the other way, and tilt and turn windows add a secure ventilation position on top. Upper floors that need cleaning from inside are well served by inward opening or reversible windows, and picture windows keep a large opening fully glazed where no ventilation is needed.

Seeing the profiles and opening styles side by side in the showroom makes the decision easier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to common casement window queries

Casement is the most widely used window style in the UK, but the terminology can be confusing. These answers cover the questions homeowners ask most often when comparing casement windows with other styles and profiles.

What is a casement window?

A casement window is attached to its frame by hinges on one edge and opens outward. Hinged at the side it swings open like a door; hinged at the top it opens from the bottom. The name comes from the casement, the hinged section that holds the glass. It is the most familiar window style on UK homes because it is simple to operate and maintain, and works in almost any room without impacting internal space

How much do casement windows cost?

DOVISTA casement windows are priced as a premium, made-to-measure product, and the specification reflects that: a Uw value as low as 0.8 W/m²K, PAS 24 tested security hardware and a profile built to Scandinavian standards as the baseline rather than an upgrade. The final figure depends on the size and number of windows, double or triple glazing, colour or woodgrain finish, glazing bars and hardware. A written quotation sets out the complete specification and price for your property, with payment options available to spread the investment.

How long do casement windows last?

DOVISTA casement windows are engineered to outlast the industry norm of around 25 years for uPVC. The steel reinforced 5-chamber profile, factory-fitted glazing and European manufacturing standards mean the frame keeps its shape, seal and colour long after a budget window has started to drop on its hinges or discolour. The glazing unit is the component that eventually needs attention on any window, and with DOVISTA it can be replaced within the original frame. Guarantee terms are set out in full at quotation.

Are casement windows the same as side hung windows?

A side hung window is one type of casement window. Casement is the broader style, covering any hinged section that opens outward, so both side hung and top hung windows are casements. DOVISTA has separate pages for side hung and top hung if you already know which opening you need.

What is the difference between rebated and flush casement windows?

On a rebated casement the sash overlaps the outer frame and sits slightly proud of it, creating a stepped appearance. On a flush casement the sash sits level with the frame for a flat face. Both perform to the same standards, so the choice comes down to the look you prefer. Our frame profiles guide shows the two side by side.

Can casement windows be double or triple glazed?

Yes. Every DOVISTA Casement Window is available with double or triple glazing. Triple glazing improves thermal insulation and noise reduction, and suitability for larger opening sections is confirmed at the specification stage. The double or triple glazing comparison explains what the U-value figures mean in practice.

Note triple glazing is not currently available with Flush Casement windows due to the frame arrangement.

Do casement windows have to open outward?

Traditional casements open outward, which is how the DOVISTA casement range is designed. Where an outward swing is impractical, for example behind a worktop or on an upper floor that needs cleaning from inside, inward opening windows offer the same hinged action turned the other way.

What is the difference between casement and sash windows?

A casement window is hinged and swings outward; a sash window has two panels that slide vertically within the frame. Casements give a larger clear opening, seal more tightly when closed and have fewer moving parts, which is why they are the stronger performer on thermal efficiency, weather resistance and security. DOVISTA has concentrated its range on the casement format for exactly those reasons. Where a period property calls for the look of a sash, a traditional casement window with glazing bars and heritage hardware delivers the character without the draughts and rattles that sliding sashes are known for.
